OUR VANISHING NATURAL SPACES
As our cities become
more crowded, natural areas where wildflowers and forests once thrived have
quickly disappeared. As a young child, I remember playing in woods in an
Atlanta suburb, where many types of wildflowers lived. Those woods are now
gone, along with the flowers. Looking back, I now realize the wildflowers,
and their habitats which I took for granted, might soon vanish.
Many of the scenes
depicted in my work are from studies in the Southern Appalachian Mountains,
particularly the rain forest region of Cashiers, N.C. I also have begun a
series of scenes of the Georgia coast, concentrating on the beautiful
habitat of Ossabaw Island. I have attempted to create works that reflect my
respect for these areas and their unique characteristics. Recently my work
has evolved into displaying wildflowers and forest scenes in an idealized,
and often allegorical, environment.
To create these
images, I use found objects from nature, mosaic tiles, textured papers,
fabric and painted papers. I cut up and layer my source material, adhering
them with acrylic medium. I will often use ten or more layers of material
to create a single work. The result is a paper collage “painting” with a
distinct, three-dimensional effect. |
